With the objective of applying the activities
from the South-South Trade Promotion Programme
to other developing countries and launching
new programmes for technical cooperation targeting
other regions from the South, ITC undertook
in 2001, 2002 and 2003 various trade flow analysis
in the three Latin American subregions and Chile.
The analyses revealed trade potential in various
economic sectors for intra-regional trade. The
pharmaceutical and natural products sectors
were particularly relevant for the region..
|
 |
The trade flow analysis undertook in 2001 centered
in countries from the Central American Common
Market enabled to launch in 2002 a pilot project
“LatinPharma2006”
that took place in Salvador. The positive outcomes
of the pilot combine with the benefits that
SMEs obtained through their the participation,
led ITC to conduct similar activities in Peru
in 2003 for countries of the Andean Community
and in 2004 in Brazil for countries of Mercosur
and Chile.
|
 |
The pilot project, as well as the events subsequently
organized, were implemented applying the methodology
of the South-South Trade Promotion Programme.
This consists of identifying potential trade
opportunities and setting-up a commercial platform
to convert them into business transactions.
These transactions allow measuring the impact
of the activities of the Programme on the intra-regional
trade development.
